It’s important to keep our diets healthy and stretch our budgets during home quarantining. We are big fans of the keto diet here, which means meat is on the menu! I think the store bought beef jerky is disgusting. It has way too many preservatives, way too much salt and its texture is very fake. So, don’t let that convenience store stuff be your benchmark for jerky. Homemade jerky can be delicious, affordable, nourishing, can last a long time and is not hard to make. Here is a CBD recipe for some healthy homemade CBD beef jerky!
First, the cut of meat you would use for beef jerky is low in fat. A great cut for homemade jerky is a round eye. It is not fatty and very affordable. You can get about 5 pounds of it for around $18, which should yield a great deal of beef jerky. It will shrink and lose weight while it’s cooking, but still, the amount of jerky you are left with is a large quantity. You will need the following tools.
- A big sharp knife
- A mixing bowl
- Cutting board
- Cookie tray
- A flat rack to put in the cookie tra
To start, you may want to pop the round eye in the freezer for a couple of hours to make slicing it easier. Once you are ready to start slicing the round eye, you should first preheat your oven to 225℉. You will see that one side of the roast has a layer of fat on it. Use your sharp knife to slice that layer of fat off the meat. Look for any other bits of fat on the outside of the meat to cut off the round eye. It’s the fat that can cause jerky to go bad sooner than later. Once all the fat is removed, start slicing thin stips of the meat with the grain of the meat. Once the meat is sliced, cut the strips to the size you desire and throw it in the mixing bowl.
Now it is up to you to decide how to season your jerky. This is the only step that could make it start to be unhealthy. Many people add a lot of salt to jerky, but if you want to make it healthy then watch how much salt you are adding. Worcestershire sauce is a common ingredient for jerky, but it often contains a lot of salt itself, so you may want to get a low-sodium version of it. If you are using Worcestershire sauce, maybe you don’t need to add any additional sauce. Of course, you will need a bottle of pure unflavored CBD oil from Sugar and Kush. Here are some other seasonings you may want to consider adding to your jerky.
- Soy sauce
- All sorts of dried herbs and spices
- Garlic powder
- Sage
- Scallions
- Hot sauce
You get the point. You decide how you want to season your jerky, and mix it all in with the sliced meat. Use your hands to mix it all really well together with the unflavored pure CBD oil. Once it is mixed, place the flat rack on top of the cookie tray and place a single layer of the seasoned meat on the rack. Don’t worry about leaving space, remember, it shrinks as it cooks. Once you have covered your rack with the meat, place it in the over for 4 hours. When it’s done, put it in plastic baggies or in some storage container and keep it at room temperature. You now will have a delicious CBD infused snack to munch on whenever you would like.
