Do not get misinformed about CBD and Covid-19.

CBD and the Coronavirus: CBD Does Not Cure or Prevent COVID-19

During this challenging period, it is of the utmost importance that companies do not spread misinformation. We are all concerned about the spread of COVID-19, but also ensuring that our hospitals and medical facilities are fully capable of caring for all those in need of medical assistance. It is important to remember that while the spread of this highly contagious virus is of great concern, other medical emergencies, essential surgeries and treatments are still on-going. People should be making informed decisions based on facts and nothing else. In terms of CBD and the Coronavirus, CBD cannot cure or prevent COVID-19.

COVID-19 Symptoms

The symptoms of Covid-19 are similar to the common cold and flu, but unique problems with breathing that can lead to pneumonia seem to be the signature of this disease.

If you have been in contact with an infected person and believe you are experiencing symptoms of the Coronavirus, then you should see a medical professional and be tested for COVID-19. According to the World Health Organization, the following are potential symptoms of COVID-19:

  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Dry cough
  • Aches and pains
  • Runny nose
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhea

Many of these symptoms are similar to that of influenza or the common cold. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there is no way to know whether or not you have COVID-19 unless you contact your doctor. Your doctor will then decide whether you should be tested for the virus and conduct the test.

Currently, What Can Cure or Prevent COVID-19?

Turning back to the World Health Organization, they clarify that there is no evidence that current medicine can prevent or cure the disease. To be clear, CBD is still being researched for any sort of potential medical benefits it may have. Viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics and certainly not a cannabinoid like cannabidiol. There may be some home remedies that can help sooth the symptoms of COVID-19, but that is all.

How COVID-19 Spreads?

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, social distancing is being stressed and even mandated in some municipalities and states.

COVID-19 is unusual for how contagious it is. It is spread through coughing or sneezing and the droplets either contacting another person directly or landing on surfaces that other people are touching. If the person that has come into contact with the virus then touches their eyes, nose or mouth, they are likely to become infected. The virus can survive up to several days outside the human body and on all sorts of common surfaces. It is for these reasons that schools and many businesses are closing down and the government is asking many people around the country to self-quarantine. The CBD Global Summit has even been cancelled due to the spread of COVID-19.

While we are seeing many great reviews for CBD oils and other CBD products, if you have seen any claims suggesting that CBD products can in any way slow, stop or cure the coronavirus, you should disregard those claims immediately. Government regulatory bodies issued 7 warning letters to companies earlier this month making false claims about CBD and COVID-19.

The Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have sent warning letters to seven companies allegedly selling unapproved products that may violate federal law by making deceptive or scientifically unsupported claims about their ability to treat coronavirus (COVID-19). The warning letters are the first issued by the agencies alleging unapproved and/or unsupported claims that products can treat or prevent coronavirus.

“There already is a high level of anxiety over the potential spread of coronavirus,” said FTC Chairman Joe Simons. “What we don’t need in this situation are companies preying on consumers by promoting products with fraudulent prevention and treatment claims. These warning letters are just the first step. We’re prepared to take enforcement actions against companies that continue to market this type of scam.”

CBD is still New

With the legalization of hemp late in 2018, the plant and its derivatives became legal to grow, sell and research without fear of criminal consequence. Before that time, hemp and CBD were not rigorously studied by the scientific community. What that means is that even though hemp and CBD have been around for centuries, they are poorly understood. It is probably the only thing CBD has in common with COVID-19, both are new and misunderstood.

Everyone should continue to keep their eyes on the news and reputable sources for any updates on the spread of COVID-19 or the development of a vaccine. Washing your hands thoroughly and not going out in public whenever avoidable are still the best preventative measures to keep from contracting this disease. The CBD industry is new and the FDA is still working on creating a full suite of regulations for this industry. In the meantime, be wary of companies that seek to take advantage of the lack of regulations by playing on your fears concerning the spread of COVID-19.
